Addison's Disease and Corticosteroids (Part 1)

Corticosteroids are essential molecules in our body that regulate body functions such as blood pressure and energy production. Too little of these molecules will obviously lead to negative consequences, but what are they and why do they occur? Join me in this episode of Medicurio where we will discuss Addison's Disease.

Cool websites to check out on Addison's disease:
The Canadian Addison Society: http://www.addisonsociety.ca/
National Adrenal Diseases Foundation: http://www.nadf.us/

Note: This video mainly talks about primary hypocortisolism, which is a direct decrease in cortisol. Another cause of Addison's disease is secondary hypocortisolism, which is due to a dysfunctional anterior pituitary that does not produce enough ACTH. With less ACTH, the adrenal glands are not stimulated to produce cortisol. The same symptoms will occur except for hyperpigmentation. Treatment for secondary hypocortisolism is the same as primary hypocortisolism - replenish the corticosteroids.
