If Patek upgrades a model as beloved, impressive, and successful as the Nautilus 5980 you know they mean business. A tremendous amount of calculations and thought are put in covering every detail of the watch to ensure that it doesn’t stray too far from the standards people associate Patek with and yet gives something to customers that feels like a worthy improvement. This is exactly the case for the 5990 Travel Time Chronograph released back in 2014.

Already having had great success with the 5980 Nautilus Chronograph and the 5164 Aquanaut Travel Time, Patek decided to integrate these features and create one of the best all-in-one everyday-wear watches around. The watch includes both the local and home time with two separate hour hands plus a day/night indicator for each time. Not one to make design sacrifices, Patek brilliantly includes an hour quick-change function via two buttons that hide themselves in the usual shape of the side-case. We get the date display with a subdial at twelve o’clock. And of course we can’t forget the chronograph function with a 60 minute counter at six o’clock mirroring the main chronograph hand down the middle. It truly is a feat of design excellence especially when you consider that all these features fit within the 40.5mm case.

Patek had to go back to the core of what makes a watch tick to pull this one off having created a new movement, the CH 28-520 C FUS. Despite the added functionality the new calibre manages to keep things slim so that this everyday wear doesn’t turn into an everyday weight. Fully automatic, the movement gives you 55 hours of power, includes a gold rotor, and of course the official Patek Seal. This is certainly a watch to cherish and hold onto at least until Patek decides to take another leap in innovation.
