Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro || Reasonably Priced Premium Headphones || My DT 990 Pro Review

The Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro's have held a special place, in studio and audiophile hearts. Why have these been the choice for so many people over so many years and can you get your hands on these today? Turns out, Beyerdynamic is tied up with a couple of authorised dealers here in India and you can make this classic pair your own quite easily.

These were originally released in 1985 and soon became the goto headphones for a lot of studios thanks to their flat, yet true sound reproduction. They've been manufactured ever since and don't show any signs of retiring this model.

All DT 990's, including the Pro as well as Edition models have been handcrafted in Germany and they continue to do the same even now. You can tell there's a sense of meticulousness thats gone into making these upon your first glance at them and even when you first handle them. They're certainly built to last. This specific model I've reviewed, has been used regularly for the last five years and the only thing thats been changed on these has the been ear pads, which you can swap our for different kinds but third party vendors, should you choose to.

The Edition version as well as these, played a part in me falling for Hi-Fi headphones about five to six years ago. I hadn't yet realised that you could get this level of transparency and resolution off of headphones in this price range. I used to avoid listening to headphones because I was used to listening to higher end speakers systems at the time, so just brushed off the possibility of headphones being able to give you that listening "high".

I use these as a base line reference headphone now for when I audition higher end headphones, they give you a good example of what you should listen and look out for when reviewing or when you get into mixing or mastering. There's a reason why so many studios look to these.

If you pair these with a good DAC and amplifier, you're set for a long time. Good hardware is obviously going to drive these at their best, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that my iPad Pro was able to drive these reasonably well. No doubt they are a bit lacking but they don't sound dead when I plug them into my iPad. I'm quite certain that some phones will struggle to drive these 250Ω headphones because not every manufacturer puts in a good DAC or Amp into their phones....I'm obviously referring to phones that still have headphone jacks of course.

I've had the same experience with my DT 990's and actually want to give them a review. All the hardware is the same, but I've found that these two don't sound identical. Maybe I'll make a video about that sometime.

Overall, in the long run they're a solid investment and have not given me or Bob (who I've borrowed these from) a bad day.
