A Budget Bike Is.....

What is a Budget Bike? The elusive answer is widely debated across the web and one thing is for certain. No one can agree as to what it actually is.

In my opinion: A Budget Bike is the best bike that the rider can afford AND ideally that bike will be the best possible bike for that rider. In many cases the best budget option is going to a used bike, but the door is definitely open for that to be a new ride.

There is a lot of noise on the internet as to what that budget bike is. Is it a budget hardtail? Is it a Walmart bike? Is it a budget full suspension bike? In my opinion, in many cases it is going to be a used bike. Most modern used bikes are more than likely going to deliver the best performance vs. price, but potential buyers must be aware of the inherent risks a used bike comes with. Those risks include the lack of warranty protection, maintenance/hidden costs, and upgrade preference costs.

Avoiding these pitfalls and making educated decisions can often times deliver desirable results whether it be a hardtail or full suspension bike and keep riders maintaining tight budgets from buying an over the top money pit. Pricing on Used Bikes can range from $300 to $5000, but you can avoid the new market pricing by 40% or more.

My favorite example is Cameron’s $2800 2017 Rocky Mountain Slayer, which came with a carbon frame, carbon hoops, and a smorgasbord of modern componentry. In 2017 this probably would have retailed over $6,000, but in 2019 that’s less than half the cost. Granted there is no warranty protection, so I’ve left a few recommendations to protect the purchase. At $2800, it’s still not cheap, however this build will outperform many new bikes at the same pricing and everything about this bike is still relevant for upgrades going into the foreseeable future.

I think it’s fair to say that bikes with lower new build values ranging from $600 to $1200 seeing equally deep cuts in pricing, but it’s going to come down to negotiating with the seller to get the right price.
