State of Emergency: Readings Against Torture, Arbitrary Detention and Extraordinary Rendition

The event is the second in the series of "State of Emergency," with the topic of torture and arbitrary detention to protest then possible act of vetoeing the McCain Amendment 1977 by President G. W. Bush. Salman Rushdie as the President of PEN opens the event. Edward Albee mentions the psycological torture and death of Federico Garcia Lorca in Spain. Pauls Auster reads from George Oppen's poem, "Route." Sandra Cisneros reads from The Book of Embraces by Eduardo Galeano. Don Dellilo then reads a spoken evidence called "Dreaming of Richard." Dave Eggers reads from Dianna Ortiz's memoir, The Blindfold's Eyes. Martín Espada reads from Raúl Zurita's work. Philip Gourevitch reads Abraham Lincoln's Lyceum Address to the Young Men's Lyceum of Springfield, Illinois. Jessica Hagedorn reads from a document called "Exhibit D." Heidi Julavits reads "Some of Us Had Been Threatening Our Friend Colby" by Donald Barthelme. Nicole Krauss reads from At the Mind’s Limits, by Jean Améry. Rick Moody reads from Curzio Malaparte's memoir, The Skin. Walter Mosley reads the poem "Hope" by Ariel Dorfman. Emma Reverter shares her experience of visiting Guantanamo Bay detention camp as well as a poem by a Catalan poet. Martha Southgate reads the poem "Colonel" by Carolyn Forché. Colson Whitehead reads a section from Jose Saramago's Blindness. Salman Rushdie reads from Dispatches by Michael Herr.
