A statement from Buckingham Palace said the Queen had told Prince Harry that by stepping away from the royal family he could not continue with "the duties that come with a life of public service".

The couple, who are expecting their second child later this year, shocked the royal family by stepping back from their roles in March last year and moving to the United States with their baby son Archie.

The statement from Buckingham Palace said while "all are saddened" by their decision, the couple remained "much loved members of the family".
