Significant Chinese Symbols in Caleb's 3.0 Myth! #lads #夏以昼 #xiayizhou

Some of the significant Chinese cultural symbols in Caleb’s 3.0 and their meaning!

Lotuses- Lotuses are beautiful and sit delicately on top of clear water, so you wouldn’t expect that the plant itself grows in mud! They purify the water around them, and take in a lot of the muddy nutrients so that the water looks clearer.
Lotuses recede into the water at night, but they open their petals when the sun is shining.
They represent purity, Reincarnation, rebirth, and strength/resilience. This is echoed in Caleb’s story, because he is the representation of Yang, which is the symbol of the sun and a masculine. In Chinese myth there is a concept of Yin and Yang (I will go more into this later). Before yin and yang were separated by the emperor of heaven, they were one.
In that same myth, the emperor created lotuses to represent different aspects of creation. In the PV many lotuses from creation can be seen, but the black lotus of destruction is omitted!

Suona(suǒnà)- This instrument is used in folk performances, but most notably in weddings and funerals. The fact that this instrument is playing during this PV foreshadows a double meaning, we are both viewing a wedding scene, as well as a mortal separation reminiscent of the grief we feel at funerals. Suona are very loud in volume, acting as a town yeller of sorts that indicates that something life changing has gone down.

Tea Ceremony/Cross Cup Wine Marriage Ceremony (héjǐn jiǔ)- a Han Chinese tradition for the Zhou dynasty. The bride and groom each hold half of a bitter melon tied with a string and drink together, symbolizing sharing the bitter and sweet parts of life together. Typically there would also be a kowtow (kētóu) during a tea ceremony, but I personally believe by omitting this part of the ceremony they are leaning into the fantasy aspect not including any aspect where the woman feels like she needs to submit to any elders or male figures over her.
