Pawnee declare war on trauma

Thursday, January 5, 2023: The Pawnee Nation is taking generational trauma head-on. Plus, Sealaska celebrates history and survival through film. And a Yaqui filmmaker looks at the loss of her family’s tie to their heritage in the short film

For decades the Pawnee Nation has dealt with the trauma brought on by the government boarding school era. But now they are tackling the issue of historical trauma head on. Last September they passed a resolution declaring a war on trauma. They also established the Pawnee Nation Scout Task Force to set up a process map to outline how they will address this issue. Walter Echo-Hawk, the president of the Pawnee Nation Business Council and Jenifer Gover LittleSun, the executive director of the Pawnee Nation tell us more.

The struggle with the loss of Indigenous identity is a reality for so many people. In the short film, “The Record,” two brothers deal with the loss of their mother…and her Yaqui heritage. Kristi Uribes is the filmmaker.

A new film from the Sealaska Heritage Institute looks at the history and origin of Celebration since its inception in 1982. “40 Years of Celebration — A Biennial Festival of Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian Cultures,” looks at history and survival. Sarah Betcher is the filmmaker.
