Claw Toe, Hammer Toe, Mallet Toe

Scott Morris, MD, Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon in Birmingham, AL, explains 3 disorders of the toes.

Claw Toes, Hammer Toes, and Mallet Toes are disorders of the toes and are common disorders in the forefoot. Sometime the terms are confusing - especially the differences between claw toes and hammer toes.

Mallet Toe is a bending down of the distal toe.
* not as common
* rarely needs surgery unless it's causing problems, then it can be straightened out surgically.

Hammer Toe is a bend of the toe at the PIP joint (Proximal interphalangeal).
* more common
* Treatments -
(conservative) digital pads
(surgical) remove joint and pin it straight

Claw Toe is a combination of disorders in one toe.
* more serious
* pulling up at base of toe
* bending of toe at Hammer Toe joint
* Treatments -
Hammer Toe surgery - remove joint & pin in straight
Base of Toe - release capsule & release tendons
