PowerStore gains traction as Dell simplifies product portfolio and emphasizes service delivery

BY MARK ALBERTSON

Over the past two years, Dell Technologies has been working to simplify its product portfolio under the Power brand. These major portfolio elements now include PowerEdge servers, PowerScale data management, PowerMax all-flash and PowerFlex for software-defined storage.

In May, Dell announced PowerStore, a storage array line designed for the mid-range market. The results to date for PowerStore, which was designed for a data-centric era where storage has become essential for virtual and containerized workloads, have been encouraging, according to one of Dell’s top executives.

“For PowerStore, the momentum has been building since our launch back in May,” said Jeff Boudreau (pictured), president and general manager of the Infrastructure Solutions Group at Dell. “We’ve had a lot of big wins against a lot of our core competitors.”

Boudreau spoke with Dave Vellante, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during the Dell Technologies World Digital Experience event. They discussed use cases for PowerStore’s technology and new cloud tools for simplifying the customer experience. (* Disclosure below.)

Operational efficiency
Customer interest in PowerStore has been driven in part by the product’s ability to provide inline data deduplication or compression without a performance hit. One of Dell’s PowerStore customers is Arrow Electronics, a global supplier of electronic and computer components.

“They leverage PowerStore to provide both enterprise computing and storage needs for their broader base around the world,” Boudreau said. “They’re taking advantage of the four-to-one data reduction, which helps them simplify their capacity planning and improve operational efficiencies without impacting performance.”

In addition to simplifying its product portfolio under the Power brand, Dell is also focused on simplifying the customer experience through new services and technologies. Among the announcements at Dell Technologies World was Dell Technologies Cloud Console.

“We’re launching a new cloud console that will provide a uniform cloud experience across all IT resources and give users an ability to instantly manage every aspect of their cloud journey with just a few clicks,” Boudreau said. “As we evolve more and more to as-a-service, specific product and product brands and logos aren’t probably the wave of the future. It’s the services, it’s the experience that you provide in how to do that.”
