Digging House Foundation | Trenching | By SHEMSS

Time to dig out the trenches for the footings, house foundation, and utilities.

There is no rule that says you must use an excavator to dig. You can dig manually with a shovel, but typically trench work for a house foundation and utilities are best left to professionals who do this with machinery all the time, Using a shovel is very labor-intensive, and if you don’t know how to operate an excavator, renting one would be pointless.

Utility locators have marked where your city lines run, so what we need to do, is dig to actually find them and connect.

When We located this particular sewer line it was 10 feet deep plus or minus, but Normally they’re about 3 or more feet deep. We use a 4” ABS pipe for the sewer line with a quarter-inch per foot slope. The sewer lines run under the foundation and into the crawl space under the house. And for water, we use poly pipe, for the fire line we use a 2” pipe and 3 quarter inch for domestic. the water pipe is tested at 100 PSI …. And the sewer line should be between 3 and 4 PSI to pass inspection, the pipes are lined with a tracer wire, in case they need to be located in the future.

Once all of our pipes are in, we pass inspection and backfill the trench. Fill in some dirt, pack it in, fill in some more, pack it in again and repeat until its filled and then we dig the trench for the house foundation and footings.

First, the rotary laser is set to keep things level.
When digging Keep your edges clean, this way you will save money on concrete. to keep edges clean it helps when the teeth on your excavator bucket are wider than the bucket itself. For this foundation, We are digging the trenches 18” deep. , Keep your trenches clean, remove loose dirt and tree roots.

Once all trenches are dugout, we are ready to build our forms for pouring the foundation.
