Lunchtime Concert Series | Phoenix Piano Trio
Lunchtime Concert Series from the Great Hall of Imperial College London
Hosted by the Blyth Centre for Music and Visual Arts
Streamed live on 12 November 2020
Phoenix Piano Trio
Sholto Kynoch piano
Jonathan Stone violin
Christian Elliott cello
The Phoenix Piano Trio is established as one of today’s leading ensembles, bringing together three renowned players and praised for performances with a ‘musical narrative of tremendous, involving depth’. Acclaimed for their honest and insightful interpretations which span the entire genre, in 2019 the Trio released the first in a series of recordings capturing the intense musical output from Leipzig in the 1840s that connected composers such as Mendelssohn, Brahms, the Schumanns and Niels Gade. Future plans include a return to Wigmore Hall and a complete Beethoven cycle in several venues. Their programme includes Haydn’s Piano Trio Hob XV No 9 in A major, composed by 1771 (and possibly dating as far back as ca. 1764-65) and Schumann’s effervescent and cheerful Piano Trio No 2 in F major.
PROGRAMME
Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)
Piano Trio Hob XV No 9 in A major
I. Adagio
II. Vivace
Robert Schumann (1810-1856)
Piano Trio No 2 in F major Op 80
I. Sehr lebhaft
II. Mit innigem Ausdruck – Lebhaft
III. In mässiger Bewegung
IV. Nicht zu rasch
Live Notes is presented by Professor Simon McVeigh (Goldsmiths University/President of the Royal Musical Association)
His research is focussed on British musical life 1700-1945; and on violin music and performance practices of the period. Books include Concert Life in London from Mozart to Haydn and The Italian Solo Concerto 1700-1760. He is co-investigator on the digital concert-programme initiative InConcert.
