Chose Dental School Over Medical School (The Journey of an Oral Surgery Resident)

This video talks about my journey to becoming an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Resident.

Many of you don’t know this but I was on the medical track my entire undergraduate years at UC Berkeley. I was told I was too young to apply to medical school straight out of undergrad (I was 19) so my advisor encouraged me to take a year off to do research. I ended up doing Crohn’s disease clinical research and I HATED IT! It was not the environment for me and I decided I no longer wanted to become a physician. I am a hands on person and I wanted to be creative but I still wanted to be in medicine so what could I do?! Dentistry. Dentistry was my answer. In retrospect, maybe if I was in a different hospital environment (surgery?) I may have stuck with medical school. Regardless, I ended up in dental school and I loved it. I still love it. I love the hands on aspect and the artistic side and I certainly love being in healthcare. It ALL worked out. In the best way. I ended up in dental school AND medical school and I am incredibly happy🙌🏼

I share this with you because I want you to know that if you suddenly find yourself without a plan, don’t despair. Everything works out. Everything happens for a reason.
