This Could Save Your Lamb's Life!

It has come to my attention that very few sheep or goat farmers knew nothing about this simple, easy to do, life saving procedure to save the life of a hypothermic lamb. So many people assume that hypothermia is caused by cold temperatures...it can be a cause but more often than not, it is caused by a lamb that didn't get enough colostrum at birth and as a result didn't get the laxative effect of the colostrum to allow the lamb to have its first bowel movement. This first bowel movement releases the merconium which is the newborns first really large and sticky poop. If not released. The lamb gets hypothermic over the next few days. Putting in a warming box will only warm it temporarily. It needs an enema of warm water. This will allow the lambs body temperature to rise so that it can be heated, fed and recuperate. If your lamb isbhunched up, cold or shows no sign of poop or you are unsure if it got enough colostrum, you should try this out. Hope this helps a few lambs or kids!
