Saving the lives of mothers and children with new clinics

Somalia has one of the highest levels of maternal and child mortality in the world - at current rates, almost 1 in 20 women will die while giving birth and 1 in every 7 Somali children won't see his or her 5th birthday.

In response, UNDP works with local governments to build and equip maternal and child health clinics. Here, women can give birth safely and make sure their children have the vaccinations, nutrition and birth registration they need for the best start in life.

It's part of the UN Joint Programme on Local Governance (JPLG) - a combined effort from UNDP, UNICEF, UNHABITAT, ILO and UNDCF - that helps local governments put in systems to boost local development in response to public demands.

This means more clinics, but also more schools, roads, markets and other services, all of which combined help create the right conditions for economic growth.

Funding comes from Denmark, the EU, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK and the US.
