Opening: Sicilian, Rossolimo
Title: Mexico City! - Borgov vs Harmon | Netflix Series The Queen's Gambit
[Event "ZSK International-07 Erevan"]
[Site "Erevan (Armenia)"]
[Date "1965.09.27"]
[Round "8"]
[White "Stein, Leonid"]
[Black "Matanovic, Aleksandar"]
[Result "1-0"]
1. e4 c5 {the Sicilian Defense} 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 {the Rossolimo Attack} g6 {
the main line} 4. c3 Qb6 {with the idea to force white to exchange the bishop
on the Knight without compensation, because Black will recapture with the
queen saving the pawn structure} 5. a4 Bg7 {good idea to cplete the fianchetto}
6. O-O a6 7. Bxc6 Qxc6 8. d4 {Borgov's novelty. White was able to push d4 with
the support of c3, so in case of cxd4, white will recapture with the pawn and
won't give Black the advantage fo the two central pawns vs 1} d6 {to free the
light square bishop} 9. Re1 Bg4 10. d5 Qc7 11. a5 {another strong positional
move that creates a backward pawn and a strong outpost for a white Knight} Nf6
12. Nbd2 O-O 13. h3 Bxf3 14. Nxf3 Nd7 15. Bf4 {all normal developing moves} b5
{is almost forced because if you watch the pawn chain and the beautiful bishop
in fianchetto, it's clears that Black must play on the queenside} 16. axb6 {
isolate the pawn} Qxb6 17. Ra2 Qb5 18. Nd2 Rfb8 19. Bg5 Kf8 {is good and also
good was the e6 push} 20. Qg4 h6 21. Be3 Ne5 {Black isn't defending passively
and found a beautiful square for the Knight} 22. Qh4 g5 23. Qh5 Nc4 {better
than Nd3} (23... Nd3 24. Rea1 {and it's not possible to capture on b2} Nxb2 25.
Rb1 {and Black is lost}) 24. h4 Nxd2 {why not Nx bishop?} (24... Nxe3 25. Rxe3
{white is winning}) 25. Bxd2 Qb3 26. Raa1 Qc2 {After} (26... Qxb2 27. Rad1 Rb7
28. hxg5 hxg5 29. Bxg5 Qxc3 30. Re3 Qc2 {but after} 31. Rde1 {Rf3 is coming
and I don't know if Black can defend this attack}) 27. Bc1 gxh4 28. Bxh6 Rxb2
29. Bxg7+ Kxg7 30. Qg5+ {a strong intermediate move that will force the king
back to} Kf8 {and now the queen} 31. Qxh4 {defending f2 and Black can't play
Rh8} Ke8 32. e5 {a strong continuation} dxe5 33. Rxe5 Rb1+ 34. Kh2 f6 {doesn't
solve any problem} 35. d6 (35. Qxf6 {would be a great inaccurancy} Qh7+ 36. Kg3
Rxa1 37. Qc6+ Kd8 38. Qxa8+ {and white is still winning}) 35... Kd7 36. Rxe7+
Kc6 37. Rxb1 Qxb1 38. Qxf6 Qb8 39. Rc7+ Kb6 40. Qf3 {and Harmon resigns.} Qh8+
41. Kg1 {you can't give any more checks} Rb8 42. Qc6+ Ka5 43. Qxc5+ Rb5 44.
Qa3+ Kb6 45. Qc1 Qb8 46. c4 Rb3 47. Qd1 {and Black can resign.} 1-0
