Shri Vadivelu & his fellow-fishermen: 2013 Zonal Physical Bravery award winner, Kolkata

Shri Vadivelu and his fellow-fishermen displayed exemplary courage in their effort to save the lives of 22 sailors who were trapped between their grounded ship and the shores during the havoc unleashed by cyclone Neelam in October 2012.

Advent of Neelam was announced and the fishermen were asked not to enter the sea. As the cyclone hit the shores and others in village were busy safeguarding their assets, S/Shri Vadivelu, Madhan, Kalaimani and Udayamoorthy embarked on a mission to rescue the sailors.

The ship was barely 100 metres from the shore. The life boats were toppling one after the other leaving all the crew members to struggle for life amidst the high waves. Around 3.00 p.m. the weather got worse with Neelam closing in. There was hardly any visibility.

The four brave men decided to act fast. Despite opposition from their families they started a boat and saved five men. By that time it was impossible to take the boat into the sea, yet courageously they swam and brought sailors ashore.

Police recognized their act of bravery and has announced that their act of bravery will be suitably recognized.
