Episode 38: The Asteroid That Changed Life on Earth

How could a single asteroid change the future of life on Earth?

Around 66 million years ago, dinosaurs dominated the planet. Vast ecosystems stretched across Earth, and many species had survived for millions of years.

Then everything changed.

A massive asteroid—estimated to be 6 to 9 miles wide—struck near present-day Mexico, creating the Chicxulub crater.

The impact released enormous energy, triggering massive shockwaves, earthquakes, and global wildfires.

At the same time, huge amounts of dust and debris were thrown into Earth’s atmosphere.

Sunlight became blocked. Temperatures dropped. Ecosystems collapsed.

Plants struggled to survive, and as food chains failed, many large animals disappeared.

Most notably, the non-avian dinosaurs became extinct.

Yet some smaller animals—including early mammals—survived.

This extinction event completely changed the direction of evolution on Earth.

The asteroid did not just end the Age of Dinosaurs—it opened the path for mammals, and eventually, humans.
