Nuclear propulsion should be the 'most stable' part of the submarine

ASPI's Peter Jennings says with nuclear-powered submarines, you can have as many in the water because the “nuclear propulsion will give them the capacity to be at sea indefinitely”.

It was announced on Thursday a trilateral security partnership with Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom, which will see Australia acquire nuclear-powered submarines.

“With nuclear propulsion, you can basically have as many submarines in the water deployed forward that were available because the nuclear propulsion will give them the capacity to be at sea indefinitely,” Mr Jennings told Sky News Australia.

“The Virginia-class submarines, which the Americans operate and it’s one of the two which I guess we’re going to be looking at now, their nuclear reactors don’t need to be refuelled for 33 years,

“This is a known technology, we’re really talking about 60s technology for nuclear propulsion submarines, that should probably be one of the most stable parts of the boat.”
