Craft beer brewing is an art and a science. As with any art, there are trends that come and go. But one trend that seems to be here to stay is the use of wet hops in beer brewing. Wet hops are hops that are picked and used within 24 hours. This gives the hops a more intense flavor and aroma. And since wet hops are perishable, they must be used within a short window of time. Another popular trend in craft beer brewing is barrel aging. Barrel aging is when beer is aged in wooden barrels, which can impart different flavors to the beer. In this blog post, we will explore wet hop beer brewing and barrel aging. We will discuss the benefits of using wet hops and how to properly use them in your brewing process. We will also explore the different flavors that can be imparted by barrel aging and how to choose the right barrels for your beer.

What is Wet Hop Beer?

Wet hop beer is brewed with fresh hops that have been picked and used within 24 hours. This process allows the hops to retain more of their original flavor and aroma. Wet hop beers are typically more fruity and citrusy than their dry-hopped counterparts.

Barrel aging wet hop beer can further enhance the flavor and aroma of the hops. The beer is often aged in used wine barrels, which imparts a subtle oak flavor to the beer. Wet hop beers that are barrel aged often have a more complex flavor profile, with layers of fruit, citrus, and oak flavors.

History of Beer

Beer has been around since the dawn of civilization and is one of the oldest beverages in the world. The first recorded recipe for beer was found in Mesopotamia and dates back to 4000 BC. Beer was an important part of Sumerian culture and was used in religious ceremonies.

The Egyptians were also early adopters of beer brewing, and it quickly became a staple in their society. Egyptian brewers even created a special type of yeast that is still used by brewers today. Beer was so important to the Egyptians that they even used it as currency!

In medieval Europe, beer was brewed by monasteries and convents as a way to provide income. At this time, hops were not yet used in brewing, so beers were often quite sweet. Hops began to be used in the 15th century, which resulted in the creation of the modern IPA style.

Beer arrived in America with the first settlers and quickly became popular. George Washington even had his own brew house at Mount Vernon. In the 19th century, lagers became popular due to German immigrants bringing over this style of beer brewing. The American craft beer revolution began in the 1970s with pioneers like Fritz Maytag of Anchor Brewing Company. Today, there are over 7,000 craft breweries in America!
