Alberta’s new Progressive Tory Party of Alberta was officially launched in Calgary on Thursday by Airdrie-Cochrane MLA Peter Guthrie, at a party launch event at the BMO Centre after an Edmonton rollout last month. Guthrie, once a member of the UCP’s governing caucus, was expelled last April for criticizing the province’s health contract handling and backing a public inquiry motion with the opposition, prompting him to lead a new conservative option. He described the launch as evidence that conservatives who no longer align with the UCP have a home again and noted strong energy around the movement. The party’s pillars are fiscal responsibility, accountability, limited government, keeping Alberta in Canada, and making decisions based on evidence. With a 2027 provincial election anticipated, Guthrie said the aim is to win seats in all 87 ridings to offer a distinct alternative for Alberta voters. Supporters gathered at Calgary event reflected growing momentum.
