Registration for Independent and Trrusted Support Workers - Yes or NO?
In this discussion, I examine the ongoing debate around NDIS registration for providers and trusted supports.
I explore the realities facing independent and smaller support workers who may eventually need to become registered providers, including the significant cost, bureaucracy, compliance requirements, and administrative burden involved.
For many semi-retired or part-time support workers, particularly those with family commitments or only working a few hours per day, the registration process may simply not be practical.
The video also discusses the alternative model where support workers operate under larger registered agencies. While this can provide compliance coverage and administrative support, it may also reduce participant choice and flexibility, particularly when participants are unable to consistently work with the support workers they know and trust.
I reflect on the contrast between smaller, more personalised providers and some of the practices that have emerged within larger organisations across the disability sector. This includes concerns around participant understanding, service agreements, and broader questions about quality, accountability, and genuine person-centred support.
At the same time, I acknowledge the arguments in favour of registration, particularly for therapeutic and clinical supports where practitioners often deliver higher-level interventions and professional services requiring formal oversight.
As someone with lived experience of blindness, involvement in the sector, and years of working alongside both participants and providers, I share my perspective on trust, life experience, participant choice, and what truly makes a quality support worker.
