Mental Health Assessment: The Primary Care Role

Join Dr Caroline West as she leads a panel discussion on the factors involved in a basic mental health assessment.

The program identifies the range of psychological, social and other factors involved in a basic mental health assessment, and outlines appropriate history-taking and the role and conduct of a mental health status examination. The diagnostic value of screening instruments - such as the K10 scale and the DASS 21 -is explored, together with their adaptability to different population groups such as the farming community, and their use as a guide to intervention and ongoing management. The use of specialist support services, including telehealth and video-conferencing, is also considered.

This program uses case studies to explore the assessment of a range of mental health presentations, including anxiety disorders, depression, personality disorders, as well as the assessment of children and adolescents with mental health difficulties. There is also be a focus on the assessment of suicidal risk.

Programs that have been developed to increase mental health literacy in rural communities, and to assist community members in particular positions to be able to identify the basic signs and symptoms of mental health conditions are also examined.
