Israel's Smotrich tells Saudis to continue 'riding camels'

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has sparked outrage after saying that Saudis should “continue riding camels in the desert” while rejecting any normalisation deal conditioned on a Palestinian state.

The far-right minister’s remarks drew condemnation from Israeli officials, who warned they could harm ties with Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia has repeatedly said it will not recognise Israel without a Palestinian state, a stance that has stalled US-backed efforts to expand the Abraham Accords, under which the UAE, Bahrain, and Morocco normalised relations with Israel. Smotrich later apologised, calling his comments “unfortunate.”
