Global National: Feb. 7, 2021 | Worries mount as 1st Brazil COVID-19 variant detected in Canada
In our top story: Canada has its first case of the COVID-19 variant first detected in Brazil and it is in Toronto. The person who tested positive is in hospital and did travel to the South American country. These variants are worrisome, especially as more provinces start to ease restrictions. As Heather Yourex-West reports, it's these risks that are making some Albertans worry about reopening too soon.
Minister of national defence and former Canadian soldier, Harjit Sajjan, speaks with Global News in his first interview since we reported on the allegations against former chief of the defence staff, Gen. Jonathan Vance. Sajjan said on The West Block that he was shocked to learn of the allegations and is committed to a fulsome investigation. Mike Le Couteur has more on the interview.
All eyes will be on Capitol Hill this week as former U.S. president Donald Trump faces his second impeachment trial. No other American president has been impeached twice by the House of Representatives. But will the Senate convict him on the charge of inciting an insurrection? That looks unlikely. At the same time, both Democrats and Republicans want a speedy trial so they can get back to work on a massive COVID-19 relief bill to help Americans still struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic. Jennifer Johnson reports.
The largest municipal police force in Canada is expanding its use of body cameras. The Toronto Police Service hopes to have more than 2,300 officers trained to use the devices by the fall. The move is a big step for transparency, but as Ross Lord explains, there are still questions whether the cameras will end abuses like racial profiling.
DC Comics has debuted a new Batman and for the first time in 82 years, a person of colour is putting on the cowl of the Caped Crusader and the writer behind the superhero is also Black. Some readers see this as a step in the right direction for representation. As Phil Carpenter reports, the industry still has a long way to go to improve diversity in comic books.
