Mario Filippeschi Sings "Meco all'altar di Venere" From Bellini's Norma

The great Italian tenor Mario Filippeschi, whom Giacomo Lauri-Volpi once called "The King of Tenors" was spectacularly successful in Italy and Spain, and held in the highest possible regard by Italian opera lovers. His success in his home country was such that he never felt compelled to travel to North America, so that his name is not as well known here as it was in Italy, but there is no question of his greatness. He possessed one of the truly spectacular voices of all time, which was so much at home in the extreme upper register that he was able to sing William Tell a total of 50 times between 1949 and 1959, an extraordinary accomplishment. For those interested in knowing more about Mario Filippeschi, I urge them to consult my blog, Great Opera Singers, for the June 17, 2012 guest article on the great tenor, written by Gioacchino Fiurezi Maragoglio, a distinguished critic with a vast knowledge of Filippeschi.
