Scapula Mobilization to Treat Shoulder Hiking
Bob Panico, PT demonstrates a mobilization technique for a very common problem seen in shoulder patients, the “hiking shoulder.” He describes his findings of a prominent cause of the problem. This is the scapula moving too soon during forward arm elevation. The scapula needs to tilt posteriorly approx. 30-40 degrees to allow for full arm elevation. If scapula begins to move too soon it uses up all of its ROM (posterior tilt) before the arm gets to full elevation (flexion) and the shoulder will “hike” in an effort to get the arm higher. There should be no significant movement of the scapula until the arm reaches approx., 90-100 degrees in forward arm elevation. If the scapula begins to move too soon the shoulder will “hike.”
