Native Northwest Artist Spotlight - Maynard Johnny Jr, Coast Salish, Kwakwaka’wakw
Maynard Johnny Jr. was born in Campbell River, BC, and is Kwakwaka'wakw and Coast Salish First Nations. He began his career as a teenager and has continued his self-directed development of art-making. He has been inspired by many NWC artists and particularly admires Robert Davidson, the late great Art Thompson, and Mark Henderson.
Maynard is principally involved in graphic work but is also designing and creating jewellery in silver and gold. Throughout his career, Maynard has also been interested in and enjoyed working with wood. He has carved several masks and panels. His designs have garnered him many awards in logo contests for companies and Native organizations. He was featured in the Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation 2 exhibit at the Museum of Art and Design, New York, in 2005. In 2009, Maynard's work adorned the cedar gift boxes that were given to special guests at the Canadian Juno Music Awards.
Most recently, a Bentwood Box designed by Maynard Johnny Jr. was donated to the Museum of Vancouver. The thought and emotion-provoking piece serves as a rallying cry for change and to honour the 215+ unmarked graves found in 2021 at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School. Bentwood Boxes are often used for cultural purposes by Coast Salish Nations.
This Bentwood Box is an important part of Truth and Reconciliation, especially considering the recent announcement of unmarked graves found by the Star Blanket Cree Nation at the site of the former Lebret Indian Industrial School. As investigations into more unmarked grave sites across Canada continue, more hard truths must be uncovered to advance Reconciliation for Indigenous People in Canada.
