Kent Pumpkin Harvest and How to Tell When They're Ready

It's finally pumpkin soup weather! It's also time for the pumpkin vine to go and make way for more garden space, so I decided to harvest most of the pumpkins in this video! Autumn is a great time to grow pumpkins here in south-east Queensland as the dreaded fruit fly decreases in numbers.
There are many ways to tell if you're pumpkin is ready to harvest. I like to look at the vine and see if it's starting to die back and when looking at the pumpkin itself I see if the stem attached to the pumpkin is hard and drying and the colour on the fruit is dulling. If these are true and the size is right for the variety, then it's usually ripe to pick!

These pumpkins actually grew out of a compost pile - amazing what nature can do if you let it go! These are Jap/Kent pumpkins - one of my favourites for cooking in both sweet and savoury dishes.
