Two prisoner exchanges took place between the 94th Division and the Germans in the isolated pockets. Mr. Andrew Hodges the American Red Cross representative assigned to the 302nd Infantry was the chief coordinator for the exchanges. On November 17, 1944, he arranged an ease fire between the Americans and the Germans in order to negotiate a prisoner exchange in the Lorient sector. After close inspection, the Germans accepted 71 men for exchange. Most of the men were from the ill-fated patrol from the 301st Infantry, with some prisoners from the 6th Armored and 83rd Infantry divisions. A second prisoner exchange was arranged on November 29th in the St Nazaire sector, fifty-three servicemen were repatriated. On December 15th and 29th, two more exchanges took place with a total of 140 allied soldiers liberated.
This video is the sixth part of my remarkable Germany At War videos. It consists of rare authentic photos and portraits of soldiers during the war that I have put together from the period of 1933-1946.

Background
Lorient Submarine Base was a submarine naval base located in Lorient, France. It was built during World War II by the German Navy, and after the German surrender was used by the French Navy. It was decommissioned in 1995 and converted to civilian use.
In 1941, the Germans, then occupying France, chose to establish a U-boat base at Lorient. But the submarines quickly became targets of constant bombing from Allied air forces. The Germans decided to build a complex of bomb-proof submarine pens, their largest U-boat base, which would house the 2nd and the 10th U-boat flotillas for the bulk of the Battle of the Atlantic. Karl Dönitz, then supreme commander of the U-boat Arm, moved his staff in the Kernevel villa, just across the water from Keroman, in Larmor-Plage.
The base was capable of sheltering thirty submarines undercover. Although Lorient was heavily damaged by Allied bombing raids, this naval base survived through to the end of the war.
Since they could not destroy the base and its submarine pens, the Allies had decided to flatten the city and port of Lorient to cut the supply lines to the U-boat bases. Without resupply of fuel, weapons (e.g. torpedoes), and provisions, it became impossible for those U-boats to return to war patrols in the Atlantic Ocean. Between 14 January 1943 and 17 February 1943, Allied aircraft dropped as many as 500 high-explosive bombs and more than 60,000 incendiary bombs on Lorient; nearly 90% of the city was flattened.
Following the Normandy landings in June 1944, and subsequent breakout, Lorient was surrounded by the Allies on 12 August 1944. The remaining U-boats were evacuated, the last, U-853, escaping for Norway on 27 August. Lorient was held until May 1945 by the regular German army forces, though surrounded by the American Army; the Germans refused to surrender.
