Mafia III in 2025: Why It’s Not the Hidden Gem You Thought

Mafia 3 crashed on me — literally one minute in — and somehow, that was just the beginning.

Nearly a decade after release, I finally sat down to play Mafia III in 2025. I wanted to love it: the 1960s setting, the soundtrack, the atmosphere — all of it had potential. But between the crashes, clunky driving, repetitive missions, and broken fullscreen, it quickly turned into one of the roughest experiences I’ve had with a “modern” open-world game.

Still, there is something here: great characters, sharp writing, and one of the most grounded portrayals of 1960s America I’ve seen in a video game. So… is it worth playing now, or should you leave Mafia 3 in the past?
