1977 Datsun Sunny 120Y, Cherry F2, 140J Violet, Bluebird 180B, Laurel, 280C & 260Z brochure review

The impact of the Japanese car industry (Datsun, Toyota, Honda etc) to the UK car buying market during the 1970s and well into the 1980s cannot be underestimated. This brochure dates to 1977, and describes Datsun's range of cars for the late 1970s. While I freely admit that they've never been favourites of mine, there's no denying that their reasonable build quality, modern designs, excellent standard specifications, and - above all perhaps - good reliability, proved to be increasingly popular to UK buyers at a time when home-grown offerings were often falling short on all the above measures (alas). They rotted just like most cars of the era, low-cost or expensive, but on a cold winter's morning the cars from Japan would usually start, thus endearing them to an increasing percentage of the British car-buying public.

The place of Japanese cars in the landscape of British motoring during the 20th Century is assured, sadly often at the expense of British car sales, the reasons for which could be the subject for a video in their own right.

In this video I take a look through this period brochure. Datsun's small cars are introduced first (Cherry F2 saloon, F2 coupe & estate, the Sunny 120Y saloons, coupes, and estates), followed by their mid-sized cars (Violet 140J, 160J, 160J SSS coupe, Bluebird 180B saloon & estate), and the plusher end of the scale - namely the Datsun Laurel Six, and the glitzy 280C saloons and estates. Fans of the sportscar were not forgotten either - thanks to the inclusion of the Datsun 260Z 2+2 & 2 seater, nor were the business owners ignored - the rear cover gives mention to the Datsun Cherry FII van, the Sunny 120Y van, and the 1-ton pickup.

I'd be very interested to read the thoughts of anyone watching this who has experience of the Datsuns featured in this brochure review, either back in the 1970s, or now.
