Lightroom tutorial: Bringing autumn to Chernobyl
Last month I made a quick visit to Chernobyl and spent an afternoon exploring the site, just as the leaves were starting to turn. In my edit, I wanted to give my experience a more autumnal feel, so here's an easy way of using Lightroom to draw out the yellows, reds and oranges.
The color module in Lightroom can be a bit mysterious so I wanted to put together a tutorial that explains how it can be used to draw out certain parts of an image. The biggest change comes about when you shift the yellow slightly towards orange - the yellow leaves suddenly become a lot more autumnal, and the other, more subtle shifts give the overall feel of the picture a much more autumnal feel. The light was very flat this day so anything I can do to play with the colors has to be quite subtle. I definitely didn't want to do too much to the colour balance as this would have detracted to the moody, grey feel of the entire day.
I wanted to show my other workings very quickly - bringing some detail to the sky, giving the image a slightly matte feel. The really interesting bit is in the colors, however - check it out!
Chernobyl is an amazing place - Pripyat in particular. It's worth visiting the Ukraine just to get an opportunity to visit the site of the world's biggest nuclear disaster.
