Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, former presidential candidate and leader of a national democratic movement in Belarus, talks to Charles Powell, Director of the Elcano Royal Institute, on the future of the democracy in Belarus.
Tsikhanouskaya's husband, the businessman Siarhei Tsikhanouski, often used his popular YouTube channel to criticize the regime of the dictator Alexander Lukashenka, who has ruled Belarus for twenty-six years. By popular consensus, she received the most votes in the presidential election of Belarus on 9 August 2020.
Together with Veranika Tsapkala, she received the European Parliament's Sakharov Prize 2020 on behalf of the democratic opposition in Belarus, which honours individuals and groups of people who have dedicated their lives to the defence of human rights and freedom of thought.
