Can Microgrids Mitigate the Impacts of Climate Change on California’s Grid? An SEC/B&Ws Conversation

This last summer has painted a clear picture of how the increased intensity and frequency of heatwaves and wildfires can push California's power grid to its limits. If predictions hold true, these phenomena will only worsen over time. Immediate solutions are needed to tackle this new reality, and microgrids represent a promising avenue to increase the resiliency of communities in California.

What exactly are microgrids? How can they play a role a making California more resilient to climate change? What are the current technical and policy barriers to their deployment in California?
