Ralf Knispel: 'Democracy and freedom of expression apply to everyone, even to people who don't want

Former public prosecutor Ralf Knispel criticized the Berlin police's handling of protests during the ARD summer interview with AfD leader Alice Weidel. Knispel stated that while demonstrating is a right, boundaries were crossed when the interview 'is in weiten Teilen durch die Lärmkulisse feier- oder gar behindert worden' (was celebrated or even hindered in large parts by the noise backdrop). He expressed concern that neither the ARD nor police intervened during the event, though police later filed reports against two demonstrators for violations of assembly laws and noise guidelines. Knispel emphasized that 'democracy and freedom of expression apply to everyone, even to people who don't want to be accepted,' arguing that tolerance must extend even to controversial parties. He noted that police were present with sufficient forces but only made requests to the protesters, which he found inadequate. Knispel stressed that legal standards must apply equally regardless of political orientation, warning against creating different standards for different types of protests.
