Maul Comparison: Day 2, quartering rounds

Comparing splitting maul performance quartering 3 foot red oak rounds from a tree cut down live a month ago. This video shows the time to quarter a round using a Fiskars X27 for one round and a 30 pound homemade splitting maul for three rounds. At the end of the video there are two failed attempts to use the Fiskars on knotty rounds.

Intended to use only rounds that were straight and clear of knots, because all knots are not created equal and that would harm the validity of the comparison. The first three rounds were from a section near the base of the tree, where the wood was a little softer, so they split more quickly than the solid sections in Day 1. The other rounds were from higher up on the tree where it had lots of knots from old branches; two of those are included to illustrate the unsuitability of the Fiskars. The 30 pound maul was successful in breaking those knotty rounds, though it took much longer than for clear rounds. Peak heart rate data is more reliable than the average, and the data for short trials is not very representative because of hysteresis between heart rate and exertion. Adequate rest (heart rate under 120) between trials, with hydration.
