the Mikhailovsky Garden
This garden was laid down at the times of Peter the Great.
It was a part of the Summer Garden.

The name Mikhailovsky this garden recieved in 1825.
Mikhailovsky Garden is located between the Saint Michael's (Mikhailovsky) Castle and the Mikhailovsky Palace.
The idea of both constructions (the castle and the palace) belonged to the emperor of Russia Paul I.

The castle was built earlier. It was a royal residence for Paul I.
Its name comes from the Archangel Michael.
The palace was built later in 1825.
Paul I started to save up money for the construction of the palace for his youngest son Michael.
When Michael was 21 years old, his eldest brother Alexander I started the construction.

The Mikhailovsky Garden was closed for visitors by the end of the 19th century. It became public only when the Mikhailovsky palace became the Russian Museum.

After the October Revolution the garden changed its name.

During the soviet era there was a tennis court, area for the stage and pavilions.

During the Great Patriotic War the statues of the Russian Museum were hid from shelling in trenches dug in the park.

Talking about nowdays, the garden passed large-scale reconstruction and began its new life as a unique monument of landscape architecture and open-air green hall.
