IFTF Foresight Talk: Building Scenarios for Rural Futures with Mary Doyle

Rural and urban communities can perceive time and futures differently. Dr. Jake Dunagan, Director of IFTF’s Governance Futures Lab, spoke to Mary Doyle, Founder of Rural on Purpose, about why she thinks cities tend to “own the future and discard the past” while rural communities are more often “euphoric about the past and in denial about the future.” Mary will share how she was commissioned by Co-operatives First to work with economic developers across four Canadian provinces to develop alternative futures scenarios for the future of rural western Canada. She’ll review the final scenarios and how she arrived at them, share what surprised her during the process, and offer her insights around rural futures. Come learn about the perspectives and challenges of rural communities in Canada and the foresight tools one passionate practitioner used to help them rethink what’s possible.
