apple imac black screen of death ( late 2009 i3 3.06ghz )

after five years of good use my 2009 apple iMac i3s screen remained black on start up one morning.
resetting the PRAM and SMC did not work.
i stripped the computer and heated the graphics card chip to reball the soldered joints, surprisingly enough, it actually worked and my iMac lcd screen came back to life.
