A photo montage of Rabat’s most iconic monuments: the unfinished Tour Hassan minaret and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, guarded 24/7 by the Royal Guard.

History + Geography:
Construction of Tour Hassan started in 1195 under Almohad Sultan Yaqub al-Mansur. He wanted to build the largest mosque + minaret in the world at 86m tall. The 44m tower you see today is all that remains after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake destroyed the mosque. Legend says it was built to be seen from Spain.

Right next to it stands the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, built in 1961-1971. It holds the tombs of King Mohammed V and his two sons, King Hassan II and Prince Abdallah. The white marble, green tiled roof, and carved cedar ceiling are pure Moroccan craftsmanship.

The Royal Guard, or "El Harass", in traditional red uniforms and carrying ceremonial rifles, change guard every hour. They are a symbol of respect for the king and the nation.
