It took more than seven years of design and construction to finish Hong Kong’s epic Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link (TMCLKL). The project set out to make a massive three-lane underwater highway that could cut travel time to the Hong Kong International Airport by 20 minutes and also reduce traffic on Hong Kong’s other busy highways. Construction had a massive budget of HK $46 billion-- about US $6.1 billion-- but it also broke tons of records, including use of the biggest tunnel boring machine in the world, the Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok TBM. This incredible machine is as tall as a 6-story building and reduced the environmental impact as well as the amount of workers-- plus it sped up construction.
There was plenty of other innovation poured into the project, like using the first caterpillar cofferdam in Hong Kong-- a structure used to keep water away from underwater tunnels and provide work space. But there were some setbacks that delayed the project by two years and caused a rift between the Highways Department of Hong Kong and the developers. Thankfully, it finally opened in December 2020. This Northern Connection was Hong Kong’s most ambitious tunnel project yet, elevating it to the likes of other ambitious underwater roadways like Japan’s Seikan Tunnel. Check out our video for everything you need to know about the record-breaking-- and budget-breaking-- Hong Kong construction project, as well as all the innovation that went into the successful connection of the Northern Territories with Lantau Island.
