📈 Stock Market Today: VIX, MSFT, NUAN and UBER - Here's what you need to know:

Here's what happened in the markets today, Monday, April 12th -- in 5 minutes or less.

Stocks finished slightly lower today, after a choppy trading session

Let’s take a look at the indices:

The Dow was 0.16% lower, the S&P 500 closed less than 1 point below Friday’s record high, and the NASDAQ was the biggest loser: down 0.2%.

So what happened:

Not much: The biggest concern today was the coronavirus:

Yes, more than 3 million vaccines a day are administered in the U.S - but in other parts of the world, it is bad: The WHO says that numbers are growing exponentially with 4.4 million cases reported in the past week. And even here in the US, we got some bad news: the CDC has recommended that Michigan shut down - since the state recording more daily infections per capita than any other state.

But this news wasn’t really shaking traders and investors.

In fact, the VIX (aka Fear Index) is trading at pre-pandemic levels. The index has been below 18 for the last 4 trading sessions. The last time the VIX was this low was back in February of 2020.

Let’s take a look at some individual stocks:

Tesla (TSLA), +3.69% shares were 3.7% higher after another analyst suggested its stock price will shoot past $1,000.

Bloomberg reported that Apple (AAPL) plans to equip its Apple TV with a built-in speaker and a camera for videoconferencing. But investors didn’t like that idea and Apple (AAPL) shares were down 1.3%

Today, Microsoft (MSFT) confirmed it would buy the artificial intelligence company Nuance Communications (NUAN) for about $16 billion. MSFT closed flat but NUAN jumped almost 16%.

Uber (UBER) is having a great month: The company said that overall gross bookings reached their highest monthly level in the company’s history in March. UBER closed 3% higher.

So what can we expect for this week?

Here are the highlights of the economic calendar:

The CPI is being released on Tuesday,
Powell is speaking on Wednesday,
and Core Retail Sales on Thursday.

But we have another highlight that traders will focus on this week:
Earnings Season gets underway with the major banks the first to report.
