Natasha Alphabet Comprehension - TikTok Homeschool Conference
The TikTok Homeschool Conference is now on more platforms!
Original Post by Natasha (@homeschoolingautisticson) :
Autism Homeschooling: From Alphabet Recognition to Reading Comprehension: part 1
All of these activities and methods can be modified depending on communication level. Always remember that communication is not only verbal speech—upwards of 90% of communication is body language. So listen with more than your ears, meet them where they are, and model communication for them, whether it’s spoken, written, or typed. They are all valid and should be respected. Each form reflects their comprehension, understanding of their surroundings, critical thinking process, processing time, problem-solving skills, and confidence as they build toward self-advocacy.
The inability to verbalize has absolutely nothing to do with comprehension. You must get creative in extracting as much information as possible from a trail of breadcrumbs. All information is helpful in determining whether you need to pivot, continue on your current path, or create completely new methods.
1. Alphabet Recognition
Identify uppercase and lowercase letters (no pictures). Practice with 3-letter games.
2. Letter Sounds
Know each letter’s sound. Use 3-letter sound games.
3. Three-Letter Words
Sound out and point to each letter while reading.
4. Rhyming Words
Practice simple rhymes (cat, hat, bat).
5. Pictures + Words (Separate)
Match words to pictures for comprehension. Begin daily readers.
6. 4–5 Letter Words
Continue the same activities.
7. Word Meaning
Match words to real items (use photo flashcards).
8. Abstract Thinking
Act out action words (e.g., “run”).
9. Sight Words + CVC
Review high-frequency and CVC words.
10. Phonics Skills
Word families, blends, prefixes/suffixes, and silent letters. Add a workbook.
Additionally:
– Build vocabulary (no pictures), syllables, sentences, Q&A, and vowel sounds
– Read daily (together and independently)
– Use real-life books (e.g., barbershop preparation)
– Turn on tv subtitles
– Use letter songs
Reminder: Go slow—this takes years. Celebrate progress.
Lastly:
– Add comprehension tasks: write a few words and have them erase the one that matches a meaning (increase choices over time).
– As spelling improves, introduce self-grading when they’re ready. The goal is to build confidence, independence, and recognition of their own progress.
This tiktokhomeschoolconference (May 4–8). Is about Neurodivergent Homeschooling.
I will be talking all about Autism homeschooling.
Be sure to follow )@Erica Johns: How to Homeschool on TikTok) for more information, as well as the full schedule and other participants.
