This is a super simple way to learn pharmacology faster and easier in nursing school, step by step. It will help you understand the critical thinking and WHY behind the side effects, and how Metformin actually works inside your body.
That way on your nursing school exams, you will be able to critically think and work thorough those NCLEX style questions. Lets get started breaking down Metformin, step by step.
Mechanism of Action of Metformin:
There are 3 primary things that metformin does:
Decreases the amount of glucose that the liver makes
Decreases the amount of glucose that is absorbed through the intestines.
Makes the cells take up more insulin
So by decreasing the amount of glucose the liver makes, decreasing the amount the intestines absorb, and causing the cells to take up more glucose, the blood glucose level is reduced.
Metformin Side effects:
GI upset:
Metformin can cause gastrointestinal upset, like bloating, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Anytime you are interfering with how the GI system works, there is an increased risk of causing GI upset. Since Metformin is absorbed in the GI system and works to limit the amount of glucose absorbed in the intestines, it can cause GI upset.
Lactic Acidosis:
The goal is to reduce blood sugar levels, and although, it is rare, Lactic acidosis can happen.
Now we know more about how Metformin works inside the body, and the critical thinking about why it would cause those side effects. If you want a deep dive into all the other medications you need to learn in nursing school, don't miss the medication database we have for you inside the NursingSOS Membership Community.
