System Shock by Looking Glass Studios released in 1994 to low sales but critical acclaim and its influence is undeniable on the gaming industry. But System Shock 2 by Ken Levine and Irrational Games of Bioshock fame really took the series to a new level by "reaching back into the Underworld"--the Ultima Underworld that is--reclaiming the rich RPG heritage of Looking Glass' previous games and melding it with their new immersive sim ideology in the System Shock series. What they got is one of the most special, janky, and strange sequels that somehow excels both in homage to the original and in bold departure from it that would reverberate throughout the industry for years to come.
