Prof. Peter Jaworski: The History and Origins of Libertarianism

What are the real-world implications of Libertarianism? And what does it look like as a political movement?

We’ve launched a new platform to highlight and teach the Philosophy of Libertarianism. Check it out if you’re interested in a deeper dive (https://courses.learnliberty.org/).

This video is Lesson 3 of the course. In it, Peter Jaworski, Assistant Teaching Professor at Georgetown University, discusses historical examples of Libertarianism and how it’s become more robust over time.

He cites Alexis de Tocqueville, who traveled to the new United States and, for the first time, witnessed liberty as a primary value.

He cites Ludwig von Mises and the Austrian economists, who approached social science through individuals, not groups.

Professor Jaworski also discusses how Public Choice Theory revolutionized our thinking about politicians, and how we’d make very different assumptions about them if we assume they’re self-interested.
