Wandering Jews and Today's Refugees - Beshalach (Ex. 13:17-17:16)

While the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society was founded in 1881 to help Jewish immigrants to the United States, in recent years it has shifted its mission from “Jews helping Jews” to “Jews helping.” HIAS sponsors “Refugee Shabbat,” observed during the Shabbat connected to the Torah portion Beshalach (Exodus 13:17-17:16) which describes the Israelites leaving Egypt to being their wandering. How does this mythical narrative inspire sympathy for refugees today? Rabbi Adam Chalom, Dean for North America of the International Institute for Secular Humanistic Judaism, explores text and context for this story.
