While the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society was founded in 1881 to help Jewish immigrants to the United States, in recent years it has shifted its mission from “Jews helping Jews” to “Jews helping.” HIAS sponsors “Refugee Shabbat,” observed during the Shabbat connected to the Torah portion Beshalach (Exodus 13:17-17:16) which describes the Israelites leaving Egypt to being their wandering.
