The Movie that was Cursed by the Norse Gods

In 2004, a determined group of filmmakers went to Iceland to make the epic Viking movie Beowulf and Grendel (2005), starring Gerard Butler. Faced with the stormiest autumn Iceland had seen in years, as well as endless budgetary and logistical problems, some of the crew began to wonder whether the Norse gods had laid a curse on the production. In this video essay / review, I examine Beowulf and Grendel and its excellent making-of documentary Wrath of Gods (2006) – what lessons can this troubled production teach us about success, failure, and art through adversity?
