History of Kelso, WA

Peter Crawford, the founding father of Kelso, WA. A surveyor by trade, he platted many towns in the PNW. He built his first cabin on the banks of the Cowlitz River in 1847. After it burned down, he built a 2 story milled wood home from trees harvested from his land. He floated them down the Columbia to be cut at the Abernathy Mill.

Arriving from the Oregon trail in 1847, Peter takes the very first donation land claim in the area, followed by Seth Catlin and the Huntington family.

Peter's family home become the first school building on the east side of the Cowlitz River. Before that, the Crawford children had to canoe across the river each morning to walk 2 miles to Freeport, a small frontier town near 3rd ave and Peardale Lane.
